S&K Environmental Restoration Inc. (SKER) uses three mechanized techniques plus hand-planting to serve its clients. The three mechanized techniques include rotary stinger, expandable stinger and the ripper. The stingers are mounted on an excavator and the ripper on a bulldozer or excavator. Rotary Stinger are used where speed and plant diversity are important values. It can plant along stream banks, floodplain and/or steep slope areas. The operator can select from three different species in a magazine of fifty plants. The Expandable Stinger is used in riprap, coarse cobble and alluvium. The operator can plant six feet or more below ground level, significantly increasing the survivability of the individual plant. The Ripper is useful in coarse cobble and/or on rocky ground, slicing a trench to loosen the ground to be planted later.
SKER’s approach and use of the stingers technology allows them to plant more plants in less time, therefore saving money. Using special containers for transporting and propagation minimizes handling from seeding to installation, which helps control per plant costs. The plants that go into the ground are deeper, with more developed root systems, increasing their survival rate. SKER’s propagation of materials native to the site provides a more natural result and increases durability. Field hand planting crews allow SKER to blend techniques across changing terrain, giving the most complete site-specific solution possible.
